Our “Big Green Barn”, which is now home to one of the area’s most sought after deli and bakeries, originally started out life as a dairy cattle barn on a 100-acre farm owned by Joseph Portman. From 1932 until the 1960s, Portman’s Farm was widely known for their milk products and “cream line", (a layer of cream that laid so thick atop the milk that one could skim it off and use it in one’s coffee), which were delivered to local homes.
From the 1960s until the late 1980s, when most of the farm land was sold to a housing developer, Leo Portman grew fruits and vegetables which were then sold inside the barn-turned-farm market by his sister, Anna and her husband, Norman Wernert.
In the 1970s Anna and Norman added ovens to the barn and began producing freshly baked cookies, pies, and breads which became just as popular as their abundant farm fresh produce.
Today, the Portman’s Farm Market is owned and operated by Anna and Norman’s daughter, Elizabeth, who has turned the business into a local mecca for great made-to-order sandwiches; catering needs; freshly baked breads, buns, pies and sweets; hot soups; baked fish sandwiches; and, of course, Portman’s infamous ham salad.
We hope you’ll stop and see us soon!
